Maths Puzzle

Hi, I asked Y6A, this afternoon, if they could solve this problem.  You can only use the 6 numbers at the top to make the bigger number, 480. You can only use each number once, but you can use any operation (multiply, divide etc.). You don’t have to use all the numbers. Y6B, it’s the same as the one you did in class today.

Can you solve the problem? Mery in Y6A has already sent me the method, well done Mery. Who is up for the challenge? Send me your workings.

  1. Mery 6A

    I got an answer!!!
    50x(7+1)+100-(4×5)=480
    7+1=8
    50×8=400
    400+100=500
    4×5=20
    500-20=480

  2. (7+1)x50:400
    100-(5×4):80
    80+400:480

  3. Clara in 6A has also found a solution. Well done!

  4. The first 4 children have submitted the solutions. I gave them 3 Dojo points and I will give 2 Dojos for any new answers.

  5. Candela T 6D

Does it need to be exact?

  6. Candela T 6D

The nearest I could get was 100×5=500-50=450+7×4=478+1=479
    That’s the nearest I got.

  7. Well done to all the maths wizards who got the correct answer. There was more than one way of doing it. Also, some children gave me the answers on paper, well done to those too. Make sure you have received the Dojos!

  8. PS I’ll try to put the paper answers on here too.

  9. Blanca 6C ???

    (100 -4) X 5 = 480

    100-4 = 96

    96 X 5 = 480

  10. Laura 5C

    4×100=400
    7-1=6×5=30+50=80+400=480
