Happy World Environment Day!
Today is World Environment Day, which is a day set up by the United Nations to raise awareness and encourage people to protect the planet. This year it is focusing on beating plastic pollution.
Plastic pollution is destorying our planet and the problem is at crisis point.
* 8 million tonnes of plastic ends up in the ocean every year
* That is enough plastic to circle the Earth 4 times every single year
* Plastic kills 1.5 million marine animals and birds every year
* By 2050 they have predicted there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish by weight
* Around the world 1 million plastic bottles are bought every minute
* 5 trillion plastic bags are sold worldwide every year
* 50% of plastic produced is only used once and then thrown away
With these daunting facts, its time to take action.
IF YOU CAN’T REUSE IT, REFUSE IT!!
The students in KS2 have been taking action by not bringing in plastic in their snacks today. We have also set up a competition whereby the children will be noting down each time they refuse single-use plastic and then the child that has refused the most plastic by 18th June will win a prize in the end of year assembly.
Now it’s time to do your bit. Help save the planet and refuse single-use plastic!
